Obituary

Adrienne Strout, 88, passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Adrienne was born in Patten, Maine, on January 4, 1938, to Rex and Thelma (Stubbs) James. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1956. After high school, she attended Husson College. In 1957, she married Barry Dale Strout, the love of her life. Together they raised their four children and ran the farm in Cornville. Being a homemaker made her proud. She worked part-time while the children were young and then worked at the Animal Clinic in Skowhegan. After retirement, Barry and Adrienne opened Adrienne’s Attic in Dexter and traveled to Pennsylvania and Florida selling antiques. In her eighties, always by Barry’s side, she rode the drag, counting the loops, as they conditioned the draft horses. Together they attended horse pulling events. Barry kept time, and Adrienne recorded the results.

Our Mum loved her family, the cabin overlooking the lake, and camp. She was a wonderful hostess. Sharing her home and the camp with friends and relatives brought her tremendous joy. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. A nurturer and caregiver, she often opened up our home to kids who needed support, redirection, or just acceptance and love. She loved everyone unconditionally, and that love was reciprocated. Mum was caring and selfless. Her daily goal was to make people laugh. She enjoyed playing the role of ‘The Nosey Neighbor’ at the Annual James Family Reunion, which she valued greatly. Entertaining others by performing skits for various groups and family was in her DNA. Adrienne also loved church, kayaking, reading, crafts, taking pictures, and writing.

Living with dementia for the last several years was hard, yet she never let it define her. She never lost her smile or the ability to bring laughter and joy to others.

She was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Skowhegan and the Christian Community Church in Dexter, an active member of Eastern Star, a member of Somerset County Extension, a 4-H leader, and a member of Maine Farm Bureau Women’s Association. She was a leader and never hesitated to take on any role she needed to.

Adrienne was predeceased by her husband Barry, her parents, her brother and childhood pal Boyd James, her sister, Brenda (James) Hogate, and granddaughter Desiree Marie Strout and great grandson, Gage Weeks. She is survived by her children James Strout Sr. and wife Leanne, Kelly Burns and husband Jim, Jody Strout and wife Kelley, and Jeffrey Strout; Sister, Wendy (James) Luce; brother, Kevin James; Grandchildren Jamie Strout ( Karen), Rob Strout, Jessica Strout, Brett Strout (Michelle), Greg Strout ( Krissy), Haley Labrie (Mike), Jacob Burns, Jesse Strout (Tabby), Danica Strout ( Zack); step-grandchildren Allison Pollock (Tyler) and Brittany Moon. Greg Burns, Laurie Flynn, and Heather Bingelis (Mark); 21 great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews.

Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Crosby Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, Maine. A service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Corinna Methodist Church, 16 Dexter Rd, Corinna. Immediately after the service, a committal service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.
