Obituary

Corinna- Alton Welch, of Maine, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born on February 9, 1936, the beloved son of Leland Newton Welch (1900–1961) and LaBelle Catherine (Ladd) Welch (1904–1967). Alton was a lifelong Mainer who loved the outdoors and the simple, meaningful things in life. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting throughout Maine, spending countless days in the woods and on the water. Those moments were among his happiest and became traditions he shared with his children and grandchildren. He also had a deep appreciation for geology and was rarely without an interesting rock in his pocket. Alton loved studying stones, identifying formations, and sharing what he knew. Whether walking a dirt road, standing along a riverbank, or exploring a gravel pit, he was always searching for his next find and took great joy in teaching younger family members about the natural history around them. He dedicated much of his life to hard work. Alton worked in construction alongside his son Barry, a partnership he took great pride in. Earlier in his career, he also worked on the pipeline in Alaska, an experience he often spoke about and remembered as an important chapter of his working life. He was predeceased by his father Leland Newton Welch, his mother LaBelle Catherine (Ladd) Welch, his siblings Madeline Brown, Aurthur Dewey, Donald Dewey Fraiser, Alfred Welch, Freeman Welch, Maurice Welch, Francis Welch, Eleanor Lane, Lila Ballard, Margueritte Welch, Florence Welch, and his beloved wife Barbara Welch. Alton is lovingly survived by his children: Michael Welch and his wife Edie, David Welch and his wife Debbie, Barry Welch and his wife Lori, Nancy Hurley and her husband Kevin, Kelly Welch and her partner Chris. He is also survived by his many grandchildren: Robert Stewart and his wife Pollyanna, Melissa Davenport and her husband Daric, Michael Welch II and his wife Amanda, Devin Welch and his wife Bobby Jo, Darcy Loabe and her husband Richard, Denali Kennedy and her husband Nathan, Amber Welch and her wife Aube, Lindsey Welch and her fiancé Kevin, Tatum Welch and her partner Abiola, Natasha Welch, Jacqueline Manry and her husband Matt, Shannon Allard and her husband Jason, and his great-grandchildren: Samantha, Chase, Paige, Dylan, Lillian, Michael III, Austin, Nick, Victoria, Cody, Riley, Delainey, Taylor, Paige, Grace, Luke, Ryan, Jaxon, Lenora, Addy, Aaliyah, Easton, Olivia, Levi, and a great-great grandson Julien. Above all else, Alton will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather. He was happiest spending time with family, sharing stories, and passing down lessons learned from a lifetime of work, perseverance, and love of the outdoors. His quiet strength, steady presence, and deep care for those he loved will be dearly missed and forever remembered as our dearest Grampa Al. A celebration of life will be held Saturday April 4th 11:00am – 2:00pm at the Corinna Community Center (42 Stetson Road, Corinna, ME).
