Obituary

Brian "Buck" Gilbert, 68, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after a brief illness. Brian was born on January 3, 1958, in Rockland, Maine, the son of Homer Gilbert and Olive (Roberts) Gilbert. He was born and raised in Rockland with his two brothers and two sisters on the family farm, Gilbert Dairy. He later moved to Plymouth where he attended Nokomis Regional High School and graduated with the class of 1976. Following high school, Brian began working as a heavy equipment operator and went on to build a career as an Operating Engineer with IUOE Local 4. Over the years, he worked on projects both in and out of state, including pipelines, Boston's Big Dig, and even grading the warning track at Fenway Park. Brian grew up with a passion for farming and loved his animals, especially cows, chickens, dogs, and cats. He lived life to the fullest, often at full throttle, and enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, dirt bikes, motorcycles, and going to the races. His love of riding was something he shared with his children and many friends. The stories of "Uncle Buck" will be held close by all who knew and loved him. He also looked forward to hunting season and treasured time spent with family and friends. Brian was a man with a big heart who was always willing to help others whenever he could. He is predeceased by his father, Homer Gilbert; Stepfather Charlie Holt; his mother Olive Holt; his brother, John Gilbert; and sister Jane Gilbert Grierson. He is survived by his daughter, Christina Gilbert; his son, Benjamin Gilbert and his wife, Kristi, his grandson, Wyatt Gilbert; his brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Sally Gilbert; his sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Jeffery Weatherbee; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family "crazy cousins", and good friends who will miss him dearly. A celebration of Brian's life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on June 6, 2026, at the Night Drifters Snowmobile Club in Detroit, Maine. He will be thought of often with every ride, through the lessons he taught (sometimes even what not to do), the love he shared, and the memories that will be cherished forever. Arrangements are in the care of Crosby and Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at https://www.crosbyneal.com/
