SAINT ALBANS - Dana R. Leavitt, 92, died December 12, 2018 at his residence. He was born March 7, 1926 in Exeter, a son of Winfield and Letha (French) Leavitt. He was educated in Exeter schools and served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was in combat with the 66th Infantry as a marksman in northern France. After the war ended he served in the Army of Occupation in Germany and Austria where he had charge of 4 German prisoners. He directed them in loading and storing rations and checked all supplies received.
After returning home, he married the love of his life, the former Barbara Stevens in 1946. He trained as a meat cutter under Guy Smith in St. Albans. In 1960, he and Barb started Green Acres Dairy Farm located on the Bubar Road in St. Albans, which they operated until retirement in 1985. Dana served on the Resolutions Committee for Agrimark for several years. He was also a former selectman for the Town of St. Albans. Dana was one of the founders of the SnoDevil's Snowmobile Club. Dana and Barb also enjoyed winters in Zephyrhills, Florida. In addition to snowmobiling, he loved to play cards, camp, hunt, fish and go 4-wheeling. He felt that he was in his element in the north woods.
He is survived by his children, Nolan and wife Linda Leavitt of Zephyrills, Florida, Darlene Tompkins of St. Albans, and foster daughter, Ethel and husband Darrell Neal of St. Albans; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and many friends. He was predeceased by Barbara in 2017.
A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, December 22nd, at the St. Albans Union Church, with the Rev. Leonard Reiss officiating. Spring interment will be in the Maloon Cemetery, St. Albans. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
