Douglas Clukey DEXTER & WESTFIELD, MA – Douglas John Clukey, 81, died October 24, 2023 in Westfield, MA. He was born February 24, 1942, in Dexter the oldest child of Roland Thomas Clukey and Elizabeth "Betty" Irene (Giles) Clukey. Doug grew up on Lincoln Street in Dexter and was an altar server for Saint Anne's Catholic Church. He enjoyed competing in the soap box derby, building model airplanes and dating his high school sweetheart "Joannie". He was a graduate of Dexter Regional High School and the University of Maine in Orono. Doug was also a member of the UMO Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Doug married his lifelong love, Joan Elizabeth (Clukey) Clukey, also of Dexter, on October 26, 1963. Doug was an engineer, project manager and director at Combustion Engineering /ABB. Doug earned his private pilot's license after graduating from college, a flight instructor's license and a commercial airplane license. He also rebuilt antique aircraft, 17 in total. After retirement he built a home in a flying community at the Winter Haven Airport in Florida. Doug remained active as an airplane mechanic, showing his planes at the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo where he received several awards and became an Expo judge. He was featured on the cover of Vintage Airplane in July 2003, flying the Stinson which he and his best friend had rebuilt. Doug and his wife traveled back to Dexter each summer spending time in their camp "Summer Haven" on Lake Wassookeag. Doug is survived by 2 daughters, Julie Giaccone and husband Paul, and Nicole Moret; his grandchildren Douglas, J'aime, EmmaMarie and Matthew; his younger siblings Roger, Gregory, Jacqueline and Jerilyn. A memorial mass will be celebrated 11 A.M. Friday, June 28th, at Saint Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter. A committal will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter. His daughters request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 383 U. S. Route One; Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074. Doug will be remembered sitting next to Joannie on the front porch of their camp in Dexter watching the loons and wood ducks, saying "Maine, the way life should be".
