Obituary

ELIZABETH M. GUDROE CORINNA – Elizabeth Mae (Willey) Gudroe, 85, died peacefully November 5, 2023, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. Betty was born May 4, 1938, in Dexter, the daughter of Arthur E. Willey and Alice (Garnett) Willey. Betty Mae attended Corinna Union Academy where she participated in many activities, particularly enjoying band and basketball. After graduation from CUA in 1956, Betty married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Gudroe. Betty and Bob were married 58 years at the time of Bob's death in 2014. Betty worked for many years at Eastland Woolen Mill and later at the Corinna Town Office. In 1963 Betty and Bob purchased a camp lot on Center Pond (Sangerville) and began a labor of love transforming the lot into their own personal paradise. Many summer days were spent at camp with their family fishing, boating, swimming and water skiing. Evenings were spent by the campfire, Betty playing saxophone, solid gold country music or simply listening to the loons and frogs over the crackling fire. Winter at camp included snowmobiling, ice skating and fishing. Betty was an impressive fisherman and avid big game hunter. She helped fill the freezer with trout, perch, deer and moose. Betty was also a member of several bowling leagues throughout her younger years. Snowmobiling was her favorite pastime. She looked forward to good trails shared with friends and a nice restaurant at the end of the ride. Later in life, Betty's visits to camp were less frequent as she encouraged the younger members of the family to embrace her and Bob's legacy. Knowing that multiple generations were enjoying camp made her very happy. She spent many hours at home completing jigsaws and word find puzzles when she wasn't mowing her lawn. Friday lunch dates with her daughters were always special. She also enjoyed following rising basketball star Cooper Flagg. Betty is survived by her three children and their spouses, Wanda and Chip Butler of Newport, Alan and Dee Gudroe of Lakeland, FL, Diana and Ralph McNaughton of Corinna; six grandchildren, Jarrett Butler, Nicholas Butler, Adam McNaughton, Brandon McNaughton, Rachel (Gudroe) Jeffs and Marcy Gudroe; 25 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband Bob, and grandson Ryan Butler. Friends may call for visitation from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, November 10th at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Spring graveside committal services will be held at Corinna Village Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Corinna Fire Department, Town of Corinna, 8 Levi Stewart Drive, Corinna, ME 04928.
