Obituary

NEWPORT - Elmer F. Long, 87, died November 25, 2020 at a Bangor hospital. He was born December 12, 1932 in LaGrange, a son of Lawrence and Lillian (Garnett) Long. He was a career Air Force Staff Sergeant serving all over the world, and received an Associate's Degree in the military. After returning home he served as postmaster for East Newport for many years. In his retirement he continued working by driving a school bus for many years. Elmer was also a long time commander of the Barrows-Skidgel Post #105 American Legion of Newport. He will also be remembered as a John Deere man through and through. He is survived by his wife, Gloria (Bennett) Long of Newport; 2 sons, Stephen and Elmer, Jr.; a daughter Patricia; a brother Douglas; and a sister Gertrude; as well as a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elmer was predeceased by an infant son Gay; 2 brothers, Lawrence and Robert; and a sister Joan. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, December 5th, at the Sawyer Cemetery, Plymouth, with the Rev. Ernie Campbell, Pastor of High Street Church of Newport officiating. Due to COViD-19, the family asks that attendees remain in their vehicles. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
