NEWPORT - George M. Gray 90, a lifelong resident of Newport, passed away April 7, 2020. He was the son of James G. and Emma (Brewer) Gray. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Leola (Dahlgren) Gray.
George graduated from Newport High School where he was a three sport athlete. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion. He was a long-term employee of Guilford Industries of Maine and also worked for the Maine Department of Transportation.
George served for 20 years as a member of the Newport Volunteer Fire Department and retired as First Assistant Fire Chief. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan and also enjoyed music, dancing, painting and model building.
He is survived by two sons, Craig and his wife Julie of Scarborough, and Mark and his husband, Timothy Michaud of Indialantic, Florida. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Rita Cushman, Wahneta Dahlgren, Elaine Doughty, and Carol Gray as well as many nieces and nephews. George was also predeceased by his brothers Sidney and Carl of Newport.
George lived within a mile of where he was born in Newport for his entire life. The love and support of his family, friends, neighbors, and the Community of Newport allowed George to live independently in his home up until the day he passed.
A graveside service will be held at a future date. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
