WINTERPORT-George William White, Jr went home to be with his Lord on April 29, 2023 in Ocala, FL. He was born February 17, 1940 in Freeport to George and Evelyn White, Sr. He was the oldest of five brothers. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1958, where his popularity was only exceeded by his sports ability, especially basketball. He was named to the All-Star basketball team and was President of his Senior Class. After high school he began his military career by joining the US Army in 1958, switching to the US Air Force then the Army National Guard and retiring with 21 years of service. George married Evelyn (McKenney) on March 18, 1967 in Dexter. George was a Little League Coach in Freeport and a member of the Pownal Swamp Hogs Motorcycle Club, where he met longtime friends Duane Snow and Reggie Campbell. George enjoyed hunting and fishing with Horace, his father-in-law, and his brother-in-law Perry of Dexter. These memorable adventures were the basis of many stories that he told more than once.
Not only was George a member of church choirs but he also sang throughout each day, old tunes, made up songs and hymns. He was also a writer, he kept several journals, wrote poems, and took up painting in Florida. During high school George played trumpet in a local band and later learned the banjo.
He retired from AmeriGas in Ellsworth as District Manager after trying out many different vocations. George attended the Congregational Church in Freeport and Hampden where he taught Sunday School, sang in the Choir and was a Deacon. At the time of his death, he was a 22-year member of the Hermon Baptist Church in Hermon.
In 1988 George had the opportunity to go on the Nathaniel Bowditch Schooner with daughter Amy and sister-in-law Nancy who were taking a marine biology college course. He had traveled all over the world but it was always his favorite trip. George and Evelyn had traveled to all 50 states and cruised the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska and Bermuda.
Florida has been their winter home since 1999. George and Evelyn have many wonderful friends in Ocala, FL. Many a day George would be holding court on the porch telling his many stories. Some that they had heard many times, but they didn't care. He always had them smiling. George also had many friends from Freeport who he remained close to.
George is survived by his wife Evelyn; brothers Peter White, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, William White (Rinda) Scarborough, Stephen White (Chris) Granite Bay, CA; daughters Noreen Schmidt (Fred) Traverse City, MI, Sarah Cote Hampden, Amy Litttlefield (Jim Clark) Bangor, and Georgia White (Patrick Eastman) Exeter. George is also survived by his wife's siblings and their families, whom he loved dearly.
George was proudest of his title of Grandfather, a title given to him by his first grandchild, Shelby, after watching the movie Heidi on one of her regular overnight visits. All 14 grandchildren loved their Grandfather: Shelby (Zach), Logan, Katy-Lee (Zac), Patrick (Katie), Trevor (Emily), Miranda, Johnny (Alexis), Jade, Trent, Midori, Brianna, Kyle, Corben, and his namesake, George. All 17 great-grandchildren followed the tradition: Audrina, Brayden, Leah, Laylah, Brantley, Abigail, Stella, Sadarah, Ryker, Braxton, Lincoln, Brycen, Wesley, Hadleigh, Grayson, and Leilani.
George was predeceased by his parents, his brother Clyde, his sister-in-law, Cecilia, and daughter Kathleen (Katy).
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 13th at 11am at the Hermon Baptist Church, 2496 US Rte. 2, Hermon, ME 04401. There will be a viewing at 10am prior to the service. Following a light luncheon, the burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
