NEWPORT - Gloria E. (Smith) Morris, 96, died peacefully June 24, 2020 at Lakewood Continuing Care in Waterville. Gloria was born in 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. She was the daughter of Helen Smith (Rice) Eastman of Exeter. Gloria's early years were spent in Brooklyn with her grandparents. In 1938 she moved to Exeter to live with her mother and siblings, June and Ronald. While living there she attended East Corinth Academy. Gloria later returned to Brooklyn where she worked at the Federal Reserve Bank.
In 1942, Gloria met her future husband Gilbert E. Morris, who was a sailor in the U.S. Coast Guard. They married on February 21, 1944 in Brooklyn and had 3 children. Gloria lived the life of a Coast Guard wife for the next 20 years, frequently moving around the country. They lived in NJ, Miami, FL, Galveston, TX, and Falmouth, MA before retiring to Monmouth Beach, NJ. Gloria and Gil moved to Palatka, FL in 1985. The family spent summers at camp in Newport, and after Gil's death, Gloria returned to Maine to be near family. Gloria is remembered as funny, an accomplished seamstress, and making a great London broil. She loved her "stories", her dogs and clothes shopping.
Gloria is survived by 3 daughters, Gayle Perlmutter (husband Rick) of Newport, Gineen Morris-Giffin of Palatka, FL, and Lori Templeton of Cape Elizabeth; a sister, June Page of Dexter; four grandchildren, Brian Dallas, Jennifer Marshall, Tyra Youland and Alyssa Templeton; 5 great grandchildren; 1 great grandson; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Gil and a brother Ronald Smith.
She will be laid to rest in the family plot at Exeter Mills Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
