Obituary

CORINTH & EXETER - James Small, 75, passed away unexpectedly December 6, 2019 at his residence. He was born January 5, 1944 in Dexter, a son of Merrill and Muriel (Butters) Small. He grew up on his grandfather's farm in Exeter and graduated from Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1962. After a year at UMO he joined the U. S. Navy for a four year stint. He went to Naval school at Treasure Island in San Francisco and then to Okinawa for duty as Communication Technician-Electrician. While there, he served on two security group detachments on the US S Hancock, CVA 19, and the USS F.D. Roosevelt, CVA 42. While there he was involved in the Gulf of Tonkin. Upon returning home, he spent another year at UMO and then a year working at Clyde Smith's Store in Exeter. He then went to Portland and pursued a career in banking. Jim held various positions in different banks up to Senior Mortgage Officer, Regional Vice President and then settled in Newport as Vice President and Branch Manager at TD Bank, always enjoying the public contact. He belonged to various Kiwanis clubs, Bangor Morning Rotary, various Chambers of Commerce, the South Portland VFW, Pacific Lodge Masons, Exeter, the Anah Shrine photo unit, and the Corinna Post American Legion. He also enjoyed teaching banking classes and doing seminars in Bangor, Waterville and Portland for the AIB and CFT. He was involved for several years with the Heart of Maine RC & D and the State Association of RC & D's serving on the boards of both. Jim found a home at the Charleston Church and he loved his church family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cutting his own firewood on his farm, traveling, photography, numismatics, woodworking, and reading. He had a great sense of humor and was very thoughtful. He is survived by 2 sisters, Judy Jones of Corinth; Sherrill and husband Linwood Wallace of Newport; many nieces, nephews; and his former wife Janice (Lord) Small of Scarborough. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to dear friends Keith and Connie Scott for all that they have done for him. He was predeceased by his beloved grandparents Jerauld and Jeanette Butters of Exeter, grandparents Ben and Etta Small of Bangor, father Merrill Small of Etna, mother Muriel Micue of Newport and Corinna, sister Starr Davis of Dexter, niece Melanie Bragg of Dexter, niece Mindy Gould of Dexter, nephew Michael Tilton of Corinth, and grand niece Mandi Foss of Corinna. A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, December 14th, at the Charleston Church, with the Revs. Matthew Ward and Dalton Dunfee officiating. Spring burial will be in Exeter Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mandi Foss Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union, P. O.
