Obituary

Dexter Maine, Joan Lucille Morse Brown Reed was born June 24, 1936, the eldest child of George and Beatrice (Biron) Morse. Growing up in Georgetown, Ma., she graduated from Perley High School as Valedictorian in 1954. She worked to put herself through UNH with a major in Science, focusing on Marine Biology. As she married as a sophomore at UNH she did not finish her degree until 1968. She taught elementary school, particularly liking science in Hudson, NH, Nashua, NH and Mont Vernon, NH until her second marriage in 1971 to Donald Reed. She passed away on Feb. 21, 2025 after a long illness at the age of 88. She was predeceased by her parents, her twin brothers Bruce and Byron Morse, Byron's wife Melinn; her stepson Richard Reed; 2 granddaughters Rachel and Lindsay Brown, and her first husband Duane Brown. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donald Reed; her daughter Judy (Buster) Gilbert, her son Bruce (Stephanie) Brown; 3 grandchildren Justin Gilbert, Kristen (Derrick) Buschmann, and Erica (John) Lengvarsky; 6 great grandchildren- Chase Paul, Colby Gilbert, Dagny Lengvarsky, Adelaide and Susannah Buschmann, and Reed William Lengvarsky. Also survived by a sister-in-law Charlotte Morse, nephew Bryce Morse, and niece Georgette Morse Cruce (Brian) and her family, several cousins. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an avid reader, gardener, rug braider and quilter; belonging to the Crazy Quilter group in Stetson, Me. She was an original extreme couponer, an avid competitive Scrabble player. She believed in the value of education and making informed decisions about current events. She enjoyed her retirement to Dexter, Me from 1977 to the present. Donations in her memory can be made to any of the following: Abbott Memorial Library in Dexter, Me; Pine Tree Hospice Dover-Foxcroft, Me, or Beacon Hospice in Bangor, Me. The family has greatly appreciated the daily care she received from Beacon Hospice through her final illness, and the respite provided by Pine Tree Hospice. Final arrangements by Crosby and Neal funeral home in Dexter, Me. No services are being held as per Joan's wishes.
