SAINT ALBANS - John Gilbert, 77, passed away September 21, 2019 peacefully at home. He was born October 11, 1941 in Portland, a son of John and Sarah (Whitney) Gilbert. He grew up in Veazie and graduated from Bangor High School. John served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War and worked as an electrician on a ship in the Pacific. After returning home he spent a brief period working for Bangor Hydroelectric Company. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a B.A. in Education. He taught middle school in Orland and Brewer. His teaching career lasted over 38 years. John was a former member of the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis Club. His character was infused with Maine's outdoor heritage where much of his spare time was spent hunting and fishing. He was an avid fly fisherman, and an active member of the Veazie Salmon Club from it's founding. He spent many hours fishing different parts of the Penobscot River.
John is survived by his wife Kathleen of St. Albans; his daughters Sally Gilbert and husband Harland Hasey, Jr. of Eddington, Jessica Raimy and husband Brian of Yarmouth; son Joshua Baci and wife Danielle of MD; brother in law David O'Brien of Dover, DE; granddaughters Violet Raimy, and Amelia and Fiona Baci; his aunt Jean Sanborn of Westbrook; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was predeceased by his sister Lucille Frances O'Brien.
A graveside memorial service will be held 11 A. M., Saturday, October 19th at the Chadbourne Cemetery, Harmony. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
