Obituary

Judy B. Judkins BANGOR -- Judy B. Judkins (nee Judith Elena Brown) of Bangor passed away on Saturday October 14, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. Judy was born on August 8, 1945 in Bath to Charles and Ellen (Tompkins) Brown, in between the two atomic bombs. She was the middle child, number 6 of 12, - surrounded on both sides by wonderful brothers and sisters. The Brown family moved to Sangerville, then to the "Leeman Farm" in Abbot. The family then moved to Monson in 1955. Judy graduated from Monson Academy in 1963 then attended the University of Maine, Orono where she studied nursing. She returned to UMO several years later and earned her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Shortly after moving to Waterville, Judy worked at Colby College. When the college library was moving their records online, no one in the department knew much about computers. Judy volunteered to lead the effort, learned on the job, and became an invaluable part of the college's administrative computing group. Long after retiring, Judy maintained friendships with many colleagues from Colby. Even while working full time in the computer industry, Judy continued creating art- painting, sculpting, drawing, pottery, and making beautiful & functional art from discarded materials. She created beautiful clocks from broken computer parts and CDs. Judy started showing her artwork at arts and craft fairs around Maine, later opening her own studio, Funky Junk Arts, first in Waterville, later in Belfast, then from her home in Bangor. Judy called herself the "VP of Salvage & Resurrection at Funky Junk Arts". Judy made many unique and beautiful chairs, cabinets, wreathes, hats, paintings, candle holders and more. In addition to making her own art, Judy loved teaching others. From her youngest students to her oldest - if someone had an interest in art, Judy would share her talent and knowledge. In addition to her professional and artistic endeavors, Judy will be remembered for how much she helped others. Whether it was a relative or a neighbor or friend, Judy would always be there to help. We suspect the only reason she was willing to accept help from others in the last few years is because she remembered how good it made her feel to help someone else. Judy also loved participating in politics - making protest signs and joining marches, making sure the rest of us learned and remembered the important struggles for civil rights and democracy and encouraging us all to be active and informed citizens. Judy was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Ellen Brown, her siblings, Tim, Becky, Susan, Charlie, David and Rachel, as well her daughter Karin Hogan. She is fondly remembered by her surviving children, daughter Nicole Judkins Cooke and husband Alan and grandchildren Jessica Elena and Raphael John; her son Nathan (Wick) Judkins and his husband Luis Esteva; as well as her former husband Fred Judkins;and her siblings Carolyn Amos, Margaret Houlihan, Gina Reed, Debbie Saucier and her husband Rick, Lisa Adams and her husband Roger; as well as multiple generations of nephews and nieces who both adored her and were adored by her. A celebration of Judy's life will be held in August. If you wish to do something to honor Judy's life - do something kind for a neighbor, find something beautiful in nature, and vote like the future depends on it. Like the end of any DBG gathering, we all wished for one more hug, one more kiss, one more goodbye. But in parting words, do something every day that brings you joy. Love you, bye.
