GARLAND - Kenneth I. Speed, 75, went to heaven with his family by his side at their home on December 16, 2021, following a brief illness. He was born on March 9, 1946, the third son of Arthur Elwyn and Martha Jennie (Pike) Speed. Ken grew up on a dairy farm in Exeter, where he enjoyed farming with his Dad until his father's death. He then continued farming with his son Kenny until his passing.
After graduating from East Corinth Academy and the UMO, Ken worked for the Maine DOT for 25 years. He attended Anchor Holds Church of God in Dover, pastored by his son-in-law Steve. He also served on the Garland Select Board. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and sharing the yield with friends and family. Other hobbies included hunting, auctions, camping, vacationing, and playing weekly Rook games. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends. A most endearing trait that Ken will be remembered for is his willingness to help others.
Ken and his loving wife Patty were blessed with 52 years of marriage. He is also survived by his son Kenny and wife Kelly and their sons, Hunter, Colin, and Trevor; his daughter Tricia Phillips and husband Steven and their sons Jeremy and wife Naomi, and Zachary, aka Regis. He was affectionately known as Pap to his five grandsons. Ken is also survived by his brother Keith, sister-in-law Christine, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Vaughn and his sister-in-law Norma. Ken was much loved by both the Speed and McPherson families. Their family dog Buttercup and cats Joy, Big Puss and cat Joey, will miss him.
Heartfelt thanks to Ken and Patty's special friends, Merton Mills, Tim and Janice Hallam, and a godsend Regina Fick. Also, many thanks to CHCS, notably Marcia, and several family members, especially grandson, Zach.
A graveside funeral and committal service will be announced in the spring. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in Ken's memory to Anchor Holds, 57 High Street, Dover Foxcroft, ME 04426 c/o Steven Phillips. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Dexter.
