Leon "Manley" Hewes, of Garland, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, at Northern Light Mayo Hospital. He was the beloved son of Leon A. and Viola (Simpson) Hewes.
Manley grew up in Garland and later earned his GED from Dexter High School. A man who found joy in simple, meaningful pursuits, Manley had a lifelong love for the outdoors and an extraordinary bond with horses. He owned several throughout his life and was well-known in the area as a skilled farrier, especially respected for his work in corrective shoeing. He cherished the many trail rides shared with his good friend Mark Vigue and others before his health declined due to multiple sclerosis.
One of his proudest accomplishments was climbing Mount Katahdin with four friends, a memory made even more special when he and his nephew, David Pingree, reached the Knife Edge together.
Manley is survived by his twin sisters, Leona Swanson of Greenwood, South Carolina, and Leola Pingree of Dexter; his sister and guardian, Joy Jandreau of Clinton; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, JoLena Hewes and Rose-Ellen Small; and other loved ones who went before him.
For the past four years, Manley resided at New Beginnings in Milo, where he received compassionate care when he could no longer live independently. In November of 2024, he moved to Pleasant Meadows, where he spent the last year of his life and was greatly enjoyed by his caregivers.
According to his wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. A private burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Garland, where he will be laid to rest among family.
