Obituary

WESTBROOK & PALMYRA - Mavis Bither has gone to join her husband in Heaven, August 2, 2022, at Maine Medical Center in Portland surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 26, 1945, in Dexter, a daughter of Preston and Mary (Walker) Sargent. Mavis graduated from Unifree High School, Class of 1963. This is where she met the love of her life, Merle W. Bither, Jr. They married in 1965 and Mavis joined her husband at the Naval Air Base and had a two-year honeymoon in Hawaii. Mavis and Merle moved back to Maine where they raised their family with love. Mavis worked part-time at Lovely's Motel in Newport and then took a job at Guilford Industries from which she retired. After Merle's passing, Mavis moved to Westbrook to be with her daughter and granddaughters. There, Mavis was a member of the Scarborough Garden Club. Being an avid gardener and loving her shrubs, plants, and flower beds, no weed was safe within her eyesight. She could always be found out in her gardens, regardless of the weather, and her hands were proof she was a true gardener. Even her lawns were the envy of any and all that drove by. Mavis was a professional shopper; she knew a good deal when she saw one and you best not be in between the sale and her. In her later years, she enjoyed shopping for her friends and family, especially her grandchildren who were the apples of her eye. Her little chuckle was so contagious, you couldn't help but laugh with her. She loved her music and appreciated anyone who could sing, along with her cup of coffee and coffee ice cream - never a cup, always a bowl. Mavis was the glue of the entire family and her compassion, love and caring for anyone in need always shone through. Mavis is survived by her daughters, Jeri and husband Bill Roberts of Jackson, and Pam Bither of Westbrook; two sisters, Beverly Cole of Troy and Louise Cole of Unity; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Sargent of Palmyra and Janet Bither of Troy; brother-in-law, Chet Bither of Troy; four grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Derek Larrabee of Knox, Katie Roberts of Hampden, and Emma and Addison Tapley of Westbrook; two great grandchildren, Jordan and Ryan Larrabee; and many nieces and nephews. She had so many wonderful and loving friends. Mavis left us here on earth, but we know she is with the love of her life, her soul mate and husband Merle. We will all smile a little more remembering the joy she brought to us all, with her great love and devotion to everyone around her. If you knew her, you loved her. We cannot thank the Westbrook Rescue crew for their quick actions and the staff of Maine Medical Center Emergency Department and SCU 3 enough. The care and compassion they showed was impeccable and they made a very difficult time a little bit more comforting. A special thank you for Officer Colby Clark with the Westbrook PD for his exceptional response and care. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Thorndike Town Office, August 20, 2022 at 12 P.M. Additionally, there will be an informal gathering at her home in Westbrook, September 10, 2022 at 1 P.M. for those who cannot travel to Thorndike. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scarborough Garden Club, 122 Spurwink Road, Scarborough, ME 04074. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
