CARMEL - Maxine Crosby, 95, passed away peacefully November 1, 2021 with her family and companion by her side. Maxine was born June 14, 1926 in Monticello to Clarence and Mildred (Hersey) Hoyt. She was valedictorian of her 8th grade class but gave up her dreams of a higher education to care for her younger brother and sisters after their mother passed suddenly. She began working for a small grocer in Red Bank Village at age 16, and as it happened, Doug Brown also came to work there at the same time. Years later, their paths would cross again. She would work for him as the Deli Manager at Doug's Shop and Save, Third Street and Union, in Bangor until she retired. Maxine also worked for W. T. Grants, downtown Bangor, also Garland's Store, and The Big Dipper, both in Carmel. In between working and raising her family, Maxine found time to plant and maintain a very large flower garden. She owned and operated "Maxine's Antiques and Collectibles" in Carmel, where she and her husband Vince enjoyed antiques and attending auctions.
Maxine was a long-time member of Carmel Congregational Church CCCC. Maxine held many church offices and was very active in all the women's fellowship projects. She also belonged to the Golden Harvest Grange of Carmel, and the Senior Citizens Club. She loved to dance and she and her husband enjoyed the weekly dances at the Eagles Club in Brewer, where they were members.
Maxine loved all nature and animals, but dogs stole her heart, especially her last poodle, "Chip". We are sure he was waiting at the "Rainbow Bridge" for her.
Maxine is survived by two daughters, Sonya Lovely, her companion Bill Lepack of Livermore, Tanya and husband Dan Kinney of Brewer; granddaughter Julie Rancourt and husband Josh of Dover, NH, granddaughter Angel Dean and husband Jack of Hermon, grandson Michael Lovely and wife Joanna of Litchfield, grandson Robert Alexander and wife Kym of Centralia, WA, grandson Thomas Jefferson and wife Ana of Hopewell, VA. Maxine leaves behind her constant companion, Frances "Bud" Garland of Carmel, his daughter Susan Starbird and husband Brian of Carmel and Hampden, and Maxine's brother, Arthur Delong and wife Marion of Madisonville, TN. She also leaves behind a sister, Noreen Bertasavage of Lenore, TN, as well as nieces, nephews, and 10 great grandchildren.
Maxine was predeceased by her husband Vincent Crosby of Carmel, a daughter Linda Ann Hanscom of Centralia, WA, and a beloved grandson Kevin Lovely of Levant. Maxine was also predeceased by her sister Betty Rideout and husband Ralph, her brothers Donald and Lester Hoyt, her brother Lewis Delong, and wife Helga, and a brother-in-law, Norman Bertasavage.
We want to send our love to "Bud" and heartfelt thanks for the years of loving and tender care he gave to our mother. We could not have accomplished our mother's wishes to remain at home at her end of life without St. Joseph's Hospice. Her team of caregivers were superb and treated her with tenderness and compassion. She loved them all.
Graveside committal services will be held in the spring at Highland Cemetery, Carmel. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
In remembrance of Maxine, please consider a donation to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave, Bangor, ME 04401; or to St. Joseph's Homecare and Hospice, 900 Broadway, Suite 2, Bangor, ME 04401.
