Maxine, 95, of Detroit, Maine, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026 at a local hospital following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loving family and her dear best friend Valerie. She was a cherished mother, grandmother and great grandmother "Nana", Aunt and friend.
Born on Christmas day 1930, Maxine was the daughter of the late Eugene W. and Wynona (Crocker) Field. A gifted scholar, she was first educated at Detroit Village School. She graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1949 where she earned a full scholarship to Radcliffe College. She instead chose to follow her heart and
married a proud young U.S. Marine, Joseph R. Schissler. Together they raised sons Joseph "Joe" and Kim and daughter Anna in their Detroit home.
Well known to legions, Maxine was first a cashier at Pittsfield grocery stores, later was hostess then assistant manager at the Carriage Inn in Pittsfield. She later became a teller for many years at Pittsfield and Newport savings banks. She served as secretary for the local RFD Carriers Association
and was engaged for decades as an active member in Detroit Good Cheer Club. She was a ballot clerk at all Detroit elections through the November 2025 elections.
Maxine is survived by son Kim Schissler and daughter Anna (Mark) Curtis, by grandchildren Brittany Schissler, Aaron (Sareena) Curtis, Allie (Hunter) Snyder and Ashley Miles, by great grandchildren Ravannel, Kinsley, Carter, Willie, Ryder and Tanner. Also surviving Maxine is her sister Joyce (Alden) Partridge and by three generations of nephews, nieces, cousins and many loving members of the Peete family.
Maxine was predeceased by her husband Joseph R. Schissler, son Joseph "Joe" Schissler and by siblings Leon (Norma) Field, Gladys (Robert) Alger, Carolyn (Lawrence) Burton, Kathleen (Matthew) Scott, and infant sister Virginia Field.
Recently she was predeceased by special friend Ed Peete.
Maxine persevered through many hardships, including polio, major heart surgery, breast cancer, heart attack, hip replacement, and grieving the loss of many loved ones. Through her challenges she never complained and instead always kept a positive outlook and thanked God for her many blessings. She will always be remembered with much love and many happy memories by family, friends and neighbors for her abundant love, caring wisdom, warm hospitality and loyal friendship. Oh yes, and her love for camp and good martinis, preferably together! She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
