Obituary

CORINNA & PALMYRA-Mildred Emma McCarthy was born February 27,1935 to Harry S. McCarthy and Ruth (Turner) McCarthy; she was married January 30,1955 to Wesley B. Libby, all of Brunswick, Maine. She was predeceased by brothers, Harry McCarthy Jr. and Bruce McCarthy, and son, Kendal Libby. She is survived by her husband, Wesley Libby; children, Wesley, Jr. and wife Nancy, Kevin and wife Donna, Rebecca Hopkins and husband Jeff, Matthew and wife Laura; grandchildren, John Libby and wife Tara, Carle Libby, Joscelyn Shepard and husband Brett, Cameron Libby, Kathrine Hier, David Libby, and Andrew Libby; ten great grandchildren; and one nephew, Isaac McCarthy. While in high school, Mildred taught and served as superintendent of Sunday School, was in adult choir, and was president of the Youth Fellowship at First Congregational Church in Brunswick. At Brunswick H.S. she was in chorus and glee club as well as being a peer counselor. After graduating she worked briefly at Hartford Ins. Co in Portland. After several months there, she and Wesley eliminated the separation between them by getting married and living in the Bangor area, with Wesley continuing at UMO. After her husband's graduation, they moved to Bedford, MA. Later, she and her husband moved to Carlisle, MA, where they began to raise animals and do gardening. In 1965 they purchased a 220 acre farm in Lyndeboro, NH, where they raised vegetables and meat, had dairy goats and chickens, as well as sold hay and operated a pick-your-own apple business. She did canning and freezing and was involved in the community, serving on the Cub Scout committee, correspondent for the weekly newspaper, and teaching Sunday School. She also obtained a real estate salesperson license and sold real estate from a home office. While her husband was attending seminary in Lancaster, NH from 1975 to 1977, she taught Sunday School, organized, and led a Pioneer girls' program, and played the organ for church conferences. She also monitored many classes at the seminary. After moving to Fitchburg, MA in 1979, she was active as a Bible study teacher for woman's groups. She and her husband were appointed local co-pastors at the West Fitchburg United Methodist Church in 1980 where she taught Sunday School, played the organ, served as a Christian Education Director, Church Administrator, and organized and directed a church musical group. They served there together until 1985, when her husband took a fulltime engineering position in Marion, MA. While in the Marion MA area, she worked as administrator and counselor at an adult day care center. Over a 30-year period, she was always nurturing and teaching her children and not afraid to defend them with vigor or discipline them with love and firmness. She inspired them in many ways. One son, inspired by her farm fresh cooking and oatmeal bread, became a gourmet chef. In 1988, Mildred and her husband purchased land in Corinna; and, over time, proceeded to build a camp and a retirement homestead. After moving to Corinna in 1995, she continued raising flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables. She and her husband have attended and been active in the Assembly of God Church in Bangor, the Pleasant St Christian Church in Corinna, and Crosspoint Church in Bangor. She continued to teach Bible studies for women, as well as minister in hospitals and nursing homes with her husband, until her health prevented it. Mildred McCarthy Libby was a contemporary image of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:10-31. A private committal service is on October 22. A memorial service is deferred to a later date.
