NEWPORT - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, Dad, and "Grampie," Ralph Douglas Underhill, 82, of Newport. He passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025 with his family by his side. He was born the son of the late William "Bill" and Erma (Savage) Underhill on June 19, 1942 in Etna, Maine.
He grew up in Etna and Stetson Maine. During his younger years he loved to bowl and play horseshoes. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping and anything else outdoors. We're sure he's catching up with his long time friends Dana, Yogi, and Bert. He was equally passionate about harness racing, and loved spending time watching the races. Throughout his life he held many jobs including Deputy Sheriff of Penobscot County, foreman at H.P. Hood & Sons of Newport, and driving dump trucks for Charles Merrill of Stetson.
Underneath all of the "gruff" he was a big teddy bear with a caring heart that loved his family and friends very much. He was very proud of his two sons with whom he shared many memories. He enjoyed helping Kenny groom and tend the horses and delivering flowers for Tim. Many mornings you would find him at the East Newport Store with his breakfast crew friends who are too many to name. He was well known for his thriving vegetable gardens and was generous in sharing his harvest. He and Nancy shared many family traditions including making cashew brittle to share with his family and friends during the Christmas season.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 61 years, Nancy (Harding) Underhill of Newport, and two sons, Kenneth Underhill & wife Jerilyn, and Timothy Underhill & friend Cameron Martin. He was known as "Grampie" to five precious granddaughters, Amanda Sladewski & husband Brian, Ashley Nichols & husband Justin, Kendra Henry & husband Dustin, Lauren Underhill & fiancé John Burt, and Layni Underhill, five great grandchildren, Sophie & Luke Sladewski, Hadley, Hayden, & Harbor Nichols, and beloved grand-dog, Bella.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Everett Underhill, Arthur Underhill & wife Glenace; sister, Jane Sherry; and parents-in-law, Vern and Margaret "Peggy" Harding. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Kay Underhill and Joyce Blackden & husband Owen, and brothers-in-law Jerry Harding & wife Juanita, and Mike Sherry. He leaves behind many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and long time friends.
Family and friends may call from 6-8pm, Thursday, January 9, 2025 at Crosby & Neal Funeral Homes and Cremation Care, 117 Main Street, Newport. A funeral service will be held at 11am, Friday, January 10, 2025 at Calvary Baptist Church, 39 Grove Street, Newport with Rev. James Knox officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Clarks Hill Cemetery, Stetson.
