Obituary

NEWPORT- Richard H. Parlee, 88, passed away peacefully as the sun dipped below the horizon on the beautiful evening of Monday, August 30, 2021. He always loved watching the sun set, and we are so thankful that his final sunset was at his home surrounded by those he loved. Dick, as he was known by his many friends and family, was born in Newport on June 25, 1933, a son of Harold and Anna (Briggs) Parlee, and the younger brother of Betty (Parlee) Condon. He graduated from Newport High School, class of 1951. Dick was in the Marine Corps from 1953-1956 and spent time stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He graduated from Husson College in 1960 with a BS in Business and then worked for a few years driving for Greyhound Bus Lines before becoming a teacher at Newport High School and then Nokomis Regional High. He taught Business Math, Accounting, Typing and Driver's Ed for over 25 years until his retirement. Dick enjoyed being involved with his family and his community. He was a Boy Scout leader while his son was young and was proud to watch him earn the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a Selectman for the Town of Newport for many years, a member of the Anah Shrine and the Meridian Splendor Lodge #49 in Newport. He was also the Treasurer of the Corinna American Legion. Dick had a love and passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with his family on the lake in the summers and ice fishing in the winter. He loved camping, deer hunting, snowmobiling and was a member of the Sebasticook Valley Snowmobile Club in which he served as President and Treasurer. In his later years, he enjoyed watching the deer with Barbie as they wandered into his yard in the evenings. Dick is survived by his companion Barbara Webber of Newport; his son Scott and wife Pam Parlee of Corinna; his son-in-law (Laurie's husband) Parker Hadlock of Freeport; and daughter Darcy Parlee and fiancee Rachael Haviland of Newport; three grandchildren, Krystal Lundstrom and husband Jason of Hampden, Ilka Hadlock and companion Hank Hobbs of Bellingham, WA, Finn Hadlock and wife Tara of Freeport; three great-grandchildren, McKenna, Mason, and Nash, as well as a great-grandson on the way. He also leaves behind the sons of his companion, Ronnie McLaggan and companion Nancy, and Randy McLaggan and wife Jackie, with whom he shared many good times and special memories. Dick was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Barbara J. Parlee in 1997; his beautiful daughter Laurie (Parlee) Hadlock in 2020; and his sister Betty in 1989. Dick's family wishes to thank the caring staff of Hospice who helped make Dick's last days comfortable and peaceful for him and for us. Per Dick's wishes, there will be no viewing hours or memorial service. A private graveside service for immediate family will take place at the North Newport Cemetery in the coming weeks.
