Obituary

Richard H. Peck NEWPORT - Richard Henry Peck, 88, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on April 28th, 2021 after a long illness. Richard was born on October 11, 1932 in Beverly, MA and grew up in Madison, CT. He was one of the four children of William "Cliff" and Ethel (Boynton) Peck. His siblings were Beatrice Hagle, Bessie Nilson and Barbara Coulter. He went on to live in East Lyme, Connecticut then to Newport. He met the love of his life in 1959, Alice (Jacobs) Peck and they were married in November of the same year. Together they raised three children. Richard graduated from Hand High School in Madison, Connecticut with further studies in Civil Engineering, Welding and Class A Truck Driving. He was always teaching, mentoring and sharing his wealth of knowledge with others. Later in life he would professionally teach welding and truck driving. A very ambitious young man, he spent considerable time working and learning various trades with his father and grandfather building boats and doing various projects. Richard was a born leader and spent 10 years as a construction supervisor with Machnik Brothers Construction in Old Lyme, Connecticut, then with Susi Construction in Pittsfield after moving north. Prior to his retirement, he spent ten years as a long haul team driver with his wife Alice for Hartt Transportation in Bangor. Richard was also the owner of several businesses: Shoreline Marine, Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Peck's Fabrication and Welding, Newport, Richard's Cafe, Orono. Building things was always a tremendous part of Richard's life, never being afraid to tackle something new. Some notable projects were a one-man submarine, numerous go carts, woodworking projects, welding projects and even design and construction of his own lobster traps and buoys, which he would later sell to others as a side business. A recreational lobster fisherman and boater, he truly enjoyed time on the water waterskiing, scuba diving and enjoying afternoons on the family boat. He enjoyed activities indoors and out such as game hunting, camping, model trains, woodworking, grooming and maintaining snowmobile trails, as well as riding snowmobiles. Over the years he took many trips with Alice and longtime friends on snowmobiles visiting many parts of Maine, Canada, and Yellowstone National Park. One of the more significant events that Richard orchestrated was through his work at the Sebasticook Valley Snowmobile Club in the 1980's when hundreds of sleds gathered and spelled out "snowmobilers are real people too" inspired by the network TV show. His family is fortunate enough to enjoy the video footage he captured as a young man of some of the projects he worked on and other precious family moments. Everyone loved to enjoy his cooking at family gatherings, the many yearly traditions of fudge making, and Mrs. Burkhart's famous cookies that he would give out on holidays. Being a community supporter was a passion and it showed through his extensive list of community roles: President, Niantic Sportsman's Club, CB Radio Club, President, Sebasticook Valley Snowmobile Club, Maine Snowmobile Association Trails Master and Scholarship Committee, Chairman of the Town of Newport SelectBoard and Board of Appeals, Newport Historical Society, and a member of Newport and Corinna Senior Citizens Groups. He is survived by his wife Alice, daughter Crystal Olsen and husband Fred, daughter Donna Berry and husband Steve, Rick Peck and wife Karen. Five grandchildren, Jennifer Berry, Melissa Kosobud, Nathaniel Olsen, Jackson Peck and Calvin Peck and two great grandchildren Brynlee and Rhett Kosobud. Dick was predeceased by a sister Beatrice Hagle. A special thanks to Melissa and Nancy from Homecare and hospice for their care and comfort. Private committal services will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Donations can be made in remembrance to the Newport Fire Department, 23 Water Street, Newport, ME 04953.
