Obituary

CARMEL - Stanley Powell, 99, died December 30, 2021 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born July 5, 1922 in Carmel, a son of Albert and Bertha (Appleton) Powell. He graduated from Carmel High School, Class of 1940. He worked in Washington, D.C. for a while before entering the U. S. Army Air Corps. He served in the South Pacific with the 5th Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He returned to the family dairy farm to work with his father. He stopped milking in 1990 but continues to raise beef cattle. Stanley was the last dairy farmer in Carmel. He was active in town affairs having served on the Board of Selectman and was a school board member for many years. He was active in the church, Grange and the American Legion Post #107 and a member of the Carmel Union Congregational Church, a past master and golden sheaf member of the Golden Harvest Grange, a member of the Pomona, State and National Granges. He was also a member of the Benevolent Lodge #82, and a member of the National Farmers Organization. He is survived by 2 sons and their wives Richard and Linda Luce, John and Debbie Luce; 2 daughters and their husbands Linda and Don Boynton, Brenda and Don Candage; 13 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Honey McDonough; a cousin and wife Rodney and Lena Arno; many nieces and nephews including a special niece Peggy Powell. Stanley was predeceased by his wife Lillian and 2 brothers Raymond and Norman Powell. Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday, February 5th, at the Carmel Union Congregational Church with Pastor Gail Januskiewicz. Due to Covid-19, masks are requested. A spring military committal service will be held at the Highland Cemetery, Carmel. Memorial donations may be made to the church, in care of the Treasurer, P. O. Box 111, Carmel, ME 04419. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
