Susan M. McLaughlin
NEWPORT - Susan Maria Zimmer McLaughlin, 74, of Newport passed away on 13 November 2022 after a long illness. She was at home with family at her side. Susan was born 11 May 1949 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, to the late Anne Zimmer and George Ozbat.
She spent much of her youth in Carlstadt, New Jersey and her teenage years in Bergenfield, N.J.; Susan moved to Maine with her husband and daughter in 1974. She worked at the University of Maine in Orono for over 30 years before retiring as Program Coordinator for the Center for Teaching Excellence. In retirement, Susan helped start the "Bone Builders" program for Newport where she greatly enjoyed the friendship and fun the "ladies" had together while working on bettering their health. Susan was an animal advocate supporting a number of animal shelters around the country, her favorite being Best Friends of Kanab, UT (a no-kill organization). She was also an avid gardener; highly talented photographer, and craftswoman. Most importantly, Susan was a loving mother, grandmother; and best spouse, friend, co-adventurer a man could have.
Susan is survived by her husband/best-friend of 60 years, Ed McLaughlin; their daughter, Aingeal R. McLaughlin Murray and husband Richard of Waterbury, CT; Grandson, Richard Murray, IV also of Waterbury, CT; Brother, George Ozbat and his wife Christine of Mosinee, WI; Sister-in-law, MaryAnn McLaughlin Lunniss and her husband, Richard Lunniss of Hardyston, NJ; numerous nieces and nephews.
