CORINNA - Wendell Smith, 90, died August 29, 2018 at his residence. He was born February 29, 1928 in Richford, Vermont, a son of Addison and Naomi (Coons) Smith. He grew up on a farm there and graduated from the local high school. He later worked at H.P. Hood Dairy. He relocated to Chester, Maine where he worked in construction and was a millwright welder for paper mills in Lincoln and Millinocket, retiring from Guilford Industries in Guilford.
He volunteered his time assisting firefighters in the area and volunteered for Project Ride. Wendell was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Dexter. Being a leap year baby his favorite saying was that he was 22 years young. He also went by several nicknames like chrome dome and scallywag, but his friends called him "blue eyed baby maker".
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Leona (Durkee) Smith of Corinna; 2 sons, Collin and wife Wanda, Eric and wife Antoinette; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Wendell was predeceased by 2 sons, Gordon and Addison, and by a brother Keith.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday, September 4th, at New Hope Baptist Church, Spring Street, Dexter. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel.
